Available for adoption: Oscar
Available for adoption through Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT) is Oscar, a 9 year old male basenji. Oscar is a sweet and well-mannered boy in need of an attentive owner, preferably a male, to care for him in his twilight years.
Oscar currently resides in his foster home in Blacksburg with one male and one female basenji, and was previously fostered in a home with three younger male basenjis. He tolerates other dogs well, but has shown a tendency to dominate other males.
Oscar is leash trained and well house broken, but prefers the indoors, especially in cold and/or wet weather. Oscar is not house-destructive, but will play with pillows and blankets. Oscar loves to eat and does beg, but would likely respond well to food-motivated training.
Oscar is very quick to bond with male owners and will exhibit signs of separation anxiety (pacing, yodeling) when left alone. His ideal owner would be home the majority of the day and would be willing to take Oscar along on errands or outings. Oscar prefers to sleep by his owner’s side and should not be crated.
Oscar’s health is good, however he currently requires a special diet due to a medical condition. Oscar is micro-chipped, neutered and up to date on all vaccines. Medical history is available.
If you think you can provide Oscar with a loving and permanent home, please visit BRAT for more information on how to adopt a basenji. There is an adoption fee that ensures BRAT can continue to provide medical attention to rescued animals, as well as education and support to current and prospective basenji owners. The fee also includes free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help you cope with any behavioral issues that may arise as your dog adjusts to his new home.
