Over the years Campus Emporium has proudly supported the work of the Calvary Children’s Home in Powder Springs, Georgia. We’d like to introduce you to this organization and, if you are touched by their work, encourage you to join us in supporting their services.

Calvary Children’s Home provides a loving and nurturing home for children displaced from their families. While at Calvary, children are provided education, counseling and guidance to ensure they grow to be responsible and caring adults. They are given a fair chance to choose and improve their life circumstances, an opportunity not likely afforded to them without Calvary’s help, and one often taken for granted by the rest of us. Founder Rev. Ben Turner was moved to create the home after the following experience:

A father and a mother, returning from the grocery store, were involved in an automobile accident. Both were killed, leaving their six children without anyone to care for them. Since it is almost impossible to add six children to an already existing family and budget, the children were separated and placed in four different homes. As they were being separated, Rev. Turner watched as the children were crying – the younger wanting to stay with the older. He realized the tremendous need for them to stay together, especially after losing both parents . . . “If children can’t have the love and guidance of parents, they should at least be able to live together as brothers and sisters. If I could build a home large enough, I could keep all the children of one family together.”

The home was opened in Smyrna, Georgia in 1966 and could house only 15 children at a time. In 1997 the home relocated to Powder Springs, where the campus expanded to accommodate over 40 children, including a dining hall, library and counseling center. Over the last 45 years, Calvary has been home to over 400 children.

We were introduced to Calvary by former Tech athlete Mickey Fitzgerald who has avidly supported the home for years. Raised in an orphanage himself, Mickey has founded and contributed to several children’s charities and is widely respected and adored for his generosity, integrity and youthful spirit.
