Cavalry Children’s Home

Over the years Campus Emporium has proudly supported the work of the Cavalry Children’s Home in Powder Springs, Georgia. We’d like to introduce you to this organization and, if you are touched by their work, encourage you to join us in supporting their services.

Calvary Children’s Home provides a loving and nurturing home for children displaced from their families. While at Calvary, children are provided education, counseling and guidance to ensure they grow to be responsible and caring adults. They are given a fair chance to choose and improve their life circumstances, an opportunity not likely afforded to them without Cavalry’s help, and one often taken for granted by the rest of us. Founder Rev. Ben Turner was moved to create the home after the following experience:

A father and a mother, returning from the grocery store, were involved in an automobile accident. Both were killed, leaving their six children without anyone to care for them. Since it is almost impossible to add six children to an already existing family and budget, the children were separated and placed in four different homes. As they were being separated, Rev. Turner watched as the children were crying – the younger wanting to stay with the older. He realized the tremendous need for them to stay together, especially after losing both parents . . . “If children can’t have the love and guidance of parents, they should at least be able to live together as brothers and sisters. If I could build a home large enough, I could keep all the children of one family together.”

The home was opened in Smyrna, Georgia in 1966 and could house only 15 children at a time. In 1997 the home relocated to Powder Springs, where the campus expanded to accommodate over 40 children, including a dining hall, library and counseling center. Over the last 45 years, Cavalry has been home to over 400 children.

We were introduced to Cavalry by former Tech athlete Mickey Fitzgerald who has avidly supported the home for years. Raised in an orphanage himself, Mickey has founded and contributed to several children’s charities and is widely respected and adored for his generosity, integrity and youthful spirit.

Available for adoption: Oscar

Oscar the Basenji Available for adoption through Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT) is Oscar, a 9 year old male basenji. Oscar is a sweet and well-mannered boy in need of an attentive owner, preferably a male, to care for him in his twilight years.

Oscar currently resides in his foster home in Blacksburg with one male and one female basenji, and was previously fostered in a home with three younger male basenjis. He tolerates other dogs well, but has shown a tendency to dominate other males.

Oscar is leash trained and well house broken, but prefers the indoors, especially in cold and/or wet weather. Oscar is not house-destructive, but will play with pillows and blankets. Oscar loves to eat and does beg, but would likely respond well to food-motivated training.

Oscar is very quick to bond with male owners and will exhibit signs of separation anxiety (pacing, yodeling) when left alone. His ideal owner would be home the majority of the day and would be willing to take Oscar along on errands or outings. Oscar prefers to sleep by his owner’s side and should not be crated.

Oscar’s health is good, however he currently requires a special diet due to a medical condition. Oscar is micro-chipped, neutered and up to date on all vaccines. Medical history is available.

If you think you can provide Oscar with a loving and permanent home, please visit BRAT for more information on how to adopt a basenji. There is an adoption fee that ensures BRAT can continue to provide medical attention to rescued animals, as well as education and support to current and prospective basenji owners. The fee also includes free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help you cope with any behavioral issues that may arise as your dog adjusts to his new home.

New Store Update

I know this is way, way late to blog about but the new store is awesome!! Beside the obvious parking and larger space idea, the possibilities are endless here. A wonderful selection already, more items and styles will be able to be displayed, suggested, and of course sold! I have heard nothing but good things about the new store and although people will of course continue to shop our downtown location, the convenience of the South Main store is welcomed by all. The addition of Gary Cannon from the Tech Bookstore is also very exciting for all! The “Hokie Nation” will never be the same now that Campus Emporium has taken over Blacksburg!!
….I was NOT paid or bribed to say this as you may think……….I actually help run this new location and just damn proud of it!! Let us know here or if blogging is not your thing hit us on Facebook or please comment from our site:)
More pics will be posted shortly for you long distance Hokies.
